I never imagined I would be this person, but Birch Lane's customer service has been one of my worst buying experiences. I was excited to try this rug + rug pad, but I was disappointed in the quality I received. The recommended rug pad was WAY too big/thick for the rug, and the rug itself never flattened due to the way it was packed. Some of the tassels were frayed, and the stitching on the back was coming undone as well. and I tried using heavy books to weigh the curling edges down, and I even tried giving it a couple of weeks of light wear to see if that would help. Unfortunately, the quality just wasn't there. I don't agree with Birch Lane's shipping policy when it comes to a product that simply does not meet the quality promised—unfortunately, the buyer is still responsible for shipping costs, even with a faulty product. Birch Lane did not offer any leniency or store credit to accommodate this issue. At the point of my return (weeks later), I only had one box appropriate for shipping back the rugs, but was required to use two labels. When I reached out to customer service via chat to request a single label or clarity around how I could use one box, I was met with unclear and robotic answers that eventually turned unprofessional as I continued to ask clarity around my options. I've purchased many things in the past from BL, but after this drawn-out and consistently unhelpful and unpleasant customer service experience, it is simply not worth it for me to take the risk on future purchases.

These are awful for my recently bought and “very thin” rugs from Wayfair. I thought it would be nice to have the thicker pads under these thin scrawny rugs but I was wrong. The rugs slip all over the place on these as they are super slippery. These are so thick that I would catch my foot on them as well. I have all of these new rugs with these new rug pads that I can’t use and to return is going to be a huge chore, plus it’s over 20 dollars I am to pay to ship back. I don’t think I will be ordering rugs or pads from Wayfair anymore. I will use the other rug stores for that. I do like Wayfair for the many beautiful items they sell, but this is a real dud, along with the recent rugs that I got that are super thin. I’m very disappointed and out money and rug pads. One more thing, these are the rug pads that are at the bottom of the product page that they suggest. It’s a clever way to sell them: make it super easy to buy them so the consumer just clicks, but doesn’t realize that these are NOT good rug pads. This is my warning. I tried using the stickiest tape I could find and even that didn’t keep the rugs on these slippery pads.
[Rewarded Review] Comfortable and Thick

The Dual Surface Rug Pad by Mohawk Home makes area rugs more comfortable and is versatile in being able to be used on different surfaces. I got the 1/4th inch thick pad in the 9 foot by 12 foot size. I was quite surprised by how heavy the pad was which helped make the pad and rug stay in place. The downside of such a large size and heavy weight pad is that it is hard to maneuver alone but it is unlikely to be moved often so I do not mind. I like that if I ever want to use the pad in a different room, I don’t have to worry about whether I have the correct pad for the type of flooring.. The rubber side down can be used for hard surfaces like wood floors and the felt side can be used for carpeted rooms. I prefer a low pile rug but this can make rugs less comfortable. The pad makes the rug a lot more cushioned and warm. I was pleased to find that the felt is made of recycled fibers which is great for the environment especially for such a large rug pad. I expected there to be a lot more factory smells or off gassing with the rubber backing. There are definitely some smells but it is not as strong as expected and just needs to be aired out for a little bit. The pad is not flimsy at all and feels quite substantial. It is easy to trim down the pad to adjust the size with a strong pair of scissors or utility knife. I feel like the quarter inch thick pad is a good thickness but you might want to go higher if you will be sitting on the floor or have a really thin rug. I was worried that the pad would lift the rug and make it easier to trip on but if you cut the pad a little bit smaller than the rug, it is not an issue at all. I always thought rug pads were just to keep rugs in place and an unnecessary extra item but this pad elevates the feeling and look of an area rug. I would recommend this rug pad if you have any area rugs without padding because it does make a difference to have one and this one is a good one.

DO NOT ORDER! I ordered two of these rug pads and both pads stunk of sewage. Absolutely repulsive! My husband and I thought we had a burst sewer pipe. We had laid one pad out to flatten before putting the rug on top of it, and began smelling a putrid stench, but couldn’t pin point the origin of the smell. A little while later both my husband and I had headaches and did not feel well. The other pad was still in the plastic bag it was delivered in, and once I put my nose to the plastic I was overwhelmed with the stench. We quickly put both rug pads outside and notice immediately that the smell was dissipating. We are both incredibly disappointed with the quality of this product!
